Don't Forget. A Sculptur in Three Acts.

three-part, constantly evolving installation featuring performative and participatory elements, in preparation for Münster 2027

The work ‘Don’t Forget’ has been conceived for the city of Münster during Skulptur Projekte 2027. Since its inception in 1977, Skulptur Projekte Münster has been one of the most significant events for art in public spaces. Held every ten years, it attracts a large international audience and also shapes the city’s cultural identity.

‘Don’t Forget’ addresses themes that are relevant to our society: transience, destruction, transformation and the fragility of cultural values – and thus of the social foundations of our coexistence. One interpretation of the project, for example, raises questions about the stability and the prerequisites of a liberal-democratic society that we seem to take for granted.

The installation unfolds in three acts:

  • Act 1: A collection of porcelain in St Joseph – a cultural heritage that was once highly valued but is often underappreciated today.
  • Act 2: The performative destruction of the porcelain by an opera singer in the city centre – accompanied by Purcell’s aria ‘When I     am laid in earth’, which explores the themes of loss and mortality.
  • Act 3: The erection of a permanent stele made from the shards in front of the Franz Hitze Haus Academy.

The stele remains as a landmark in the urban landscape and continues to encourage reflection and discussion even after the Skulptur Projekte festival has ended. It stimulates social debate and keeps questions of values constantly in the public eye.
